Intro/New Features
As any hockey goaltender knows, having reliable and high-performance gear is essential for success on the ice. Bauer has taken their renowned Vapor gear and upgraded it for the 2023 season with a combination of new technology, what worked before, and what’s worked in their other gear families. The Vapor X5 goalie stick is the next step up in the Vapor family featuring Pentagrip, an Aerofoam and Bridge Core, and a UD carbon construction.
Shaft Construction
The shaft is constructed with unidirectional carbon, which provides exceptional strength and stiffness while keeping the overall weight of the stick low. The unidirectional nature of the carbon fibres provides targeted reinforcement in strategic areas of the stick for increased durability. UD carbon also enhances the responsiveness and energy transfer, making it easier and more efficient to pass or shoot when needed.
Paddle Construction
The paddle is constructed with Aerofoam coupled with Bridge Core. Aerofoam is designed to provide increased stiffness and responsiveness, allowing for better energy transfer and a more accurate shot. It is also very lightweight for better maneuverability. On a similar note, Bridge Core comes from the Supreme side of Bauer’s gear and combines light weight with great durability.
Blade Construction/Stiffness
The blade sticks to the Textreme construction with a BridgeCore blade core. Textreme carbon fibre is characterized by its unique weaving pattern, which consists of thin, spread carbon fibres woven together in a crisscross pattern. This weaving technique allows for optimal weight reduction while maintaining excellent strength and durability.
Graphics
The graphics of the Vapor X5 look quite different from the previous iteration, but closer to the rest of the line in going toward a more retro Vapor look. The paddle and top of the shaft are darker grey/black on all colour variations, with it lightening to white right at the junction between the paddle and shaft. The new Bauer logo is visible at the top of the shaft.
Grip
The Vapor X5 uses a Pentagrip grip and geometry between the paddle and the shaft for a more ergonomic and natural shape. This optimized grip is textured with an asymmetrical pentagonal shape over the shaft and on the front side, where the goalie would hold the stick. That way, the goalie can hold the stick more naturally while holding more of the stick in their hand.
Blade Patterns, Paddle Lengths, Stick Lengths, Weight, Level of Play
The Vapor X5 Intermediate goalie stick is available in 23” and 24” lengths in the following colourways: Silver/Black, Black, Blue, and Red. At stock, this stick is only available with the P31 curve.

Goalie Stick Sizing Information
Unlike other pieces of gear, Goalie Sticks are sized mostly to the goaltender’s preference and playing style rather than their height. The most important measurement, when purchasing a new goal stick, is the paddle height (the wide portion of the stick), which is usually taken from the heel of the stick to the shaft/paddle interface. The reason for the paddle height’s significance is because it sets up the goaltender’s depth in the ready stance and (if properly sized) positions the blocker in an optimal position.
Sizing Your Goalie Stick
To start analyzing the size of your goalie stick, put on your goalie skates to get an accurate height of where you will be in your stance. If you’re looking to be even more accurate, strap on your goalie pads and blocker as well. Once that is done, get comfortable in your natural stance (the one you’d be in during a majority of gameplay) and look for the following:
1. The entire blade of the stick is flush with the ground while being 1’ - 2’ in front of your feet
2. After getting your stick into the flush position, check that the inside edge of the blocker hand sits on the outside edge of the goal pad (this is while holding just above the paddle).
Goalie Stick Sizing Considerations
Goalie Stick sizing can be very subjective compared to other pieces of equipment. The reason for this is the ambiguity of each goaltenders ‘natural stance’, especially with younger goaltenders. It is rather common for children to use taller sticks in comparison to their height, as their stance depth isn’t usually as aggressive as a seasoned goalie.
The shaft length of a goalie stick is usually best left at its stock length, as it serves to counteract the weight of the blade and ideally place the center of gravity at the top of the paddle. The one exception to this rule is for advanced puck handlers, cutting the shaft will allow more power transfer when shooting as a result of being able to keep the blade flush to the ice while near the goaltender’s feet.
