While the Bauer 940 Senior Goalie Mask may replace the 940X, these two masks are not even comparable. With a new FiberComp shell and Airflow liner, the 940 is a great option for the performance level goalie.
Shell
The 940 uses a new FiberComp composite shell, bringing a protective and light fiberglass build that far outperforms the lexan shell of the previous 940X.
Liner
An AirFlow line made of a soft VN foam is designed to keep goalies cool and comfortable throughout the game.
Cage
The 940 cage utilizes a strong new enhanced puck view wire to suit more goalies sight-lines providing better vision on the ice when compared to previous profile masks.
**Please Note** Due to Canadian restrictions, non-certified “cateye” cages are not available for sale at The Hockey Shop.
Chin Cup
The chin cup is Bauer’s IX foam chin cup with elastic stretch providing a comfortable fit and feel.
Sweatband
The sweatband of the 940 mask is made of Bauer’s Thermocore material designed to wick away sweat, keeping you cool throughout the ice time.
Certification
With the CSA Straight bar cage, the 940 provides both HECC (5 Year expiry) and CSA certification. The mask is suitable for play in both Canada and the USA in the current configuration.
Mask Bag
The 940 comes with a durable vented padded mask bag designed to protect your mask and keep it scratch free while allowing it to dry out between ice times.
Sizes & Colors
The Bauer 940 Goalie Mask is available in a White colourway with Black Bauer logos. It features a new sizing system designed to fit more head shapes than the previous generation XPM. The Bauer 940 is available in senior only with Small, Medium and Large sizes.

I decided to save a few dollars and purchased the 940, but mostly because of inventory issues. I could not find a 950 model and needed to replace my 10year + mask.
Time will tell how much protection the mask will offer.
Looks great but only available in White.
Bauer should consider offering a black strap system… the white will turn yellow with time and sweat.
Thanks Carl for the recommendation. My son loves his new mask.
Upgraded from an old itech
Fits great
Looks sharp, feels great!

Goalie Mask Sizing
When purchasing a new goalie mask, it is crucial to ensure that it fits properly. Even entry-level masks with a proper fit will do a better job at protecting the head compared to a superior model that is not fitted properly. Unlike other pieces of goalie equipment, we don't typically size goalie masks for growth as a) it sacrifices protection and b) the foams inside the mask will expand over time creating more room for the head.
What Size Goalie Mask Am I?
The first step is to approximate your size using the sizing charts listed on any individual mask’s product page on our website; usually this is accomplished by matching a head circumference and/or hat size to a given mask size. When measuring your head’s circumference, it is important to measure at approximately 1” above the eyebrows while keeping the tape measure parallel (at the “hat line”) around the entire head. In addition, when using hat sizes should be those of fitted hats that aren’t overly tight or loose.
Sizing & Fitting A Goal Mask Properly
Once a size has been established there are four parameters the goaltender should be looking for:
- 1) The top edge of the window (opening inside the cage) is about 1” above the eyebrows and the sweatband inside the mask sits directly on the skin (ie. there is no gap between the mask and forehead).
- 2) The backplate hugs the back of the goaltender’s head and its edges don’t extend past the edges of the mask’s shell. Here, we want to reduce the possibility for gaps at the back of the goaltender’s head as well as ensuring the head is secure inside the mask. It should be noted, that if all other parameters are met as far as fitting is concerned, the backplate extending a little too far isn’t of major concern.
- 3) The chin cup is tightened such that it is worn securely against the chin and prevents the mask from shifting up and down while on the head.
- 4) The temples and/or cheeks are snug against the foam of the mask such that there are little to no visible gaps on each side of the head and prevents the mask from shifting laterally while on the head.
Once these have been accounted for an indicator of good fit is if the mask shifts on the head. Try grabbing the cage and shaking the mask back and forth – if the mask forces your head to move (rather than the mask moving on your head) you’ve got a great fit!
General Goalie Mask Upkeep & Maintenance
Be sure to check your fit every few months, specifically compressed foams inside the goalie mask. You also want to keep an eye on dented cages and stretched harnesses. These will happen overtime through regular use, and can compromise fit and safety. If you are at all worried about the fit or safety of your current mask, do not hesitate to contact one of our goalie experts for advice.
